ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 13TH
please join us at the nursery for our annual holiday party - Customer Appreciation Day, if you like - which we always hold as close to St. Lucia's Day as possible (link takes you to the Wikipedia article), this year on the actual day!  We usually celebrate it in fine Scandie tradition with a julbord (Christmas smörgåsbord) and the infamous liquid fire called glögg, but the economy is an issue this year so the julbord is, er, pretty much a large tin of Danish butter cookies and some clementines.  That bit of lameness aside, glögg will still be served! - also non-alcoholic cider and perhaps some tea, if we get our act together.  We thought about just cancelling the event but we all deserve a little celebration after this difficult year, don't we?

WHAT'S ON SALE THIS MONTH??...
now through December 31st - shop early for best selection!
FLOWER BULBS - NOW HALF-PRICE
There's still time to plant tulips, daffodils, crocus, alliums, fritillarias, muscari, hyacinths and anemones - but you've got to get 'em in the ground or in pots NOW!  This month the sale also includes our few remaining garlic and shallot sets; only the holiday bulbs (paperwhites, amaryllis) are excluded.

PAPERWHITE UPDATE: Sorry, but our second shipment was frozen in transit...the bulbs are mush.  Apparently we're sold out for the season.

ALL BOOKS - 30% OFF
Sad fact: book sales have flatlined this year, so it's time to close 'em out and find something else to occupy the real estate.  Yes, that sucks.  Yes, we feel fortunate that most things we sell still aren't available from a certain local online mega-retailer.  The good news for you is, you get great holiday deals on some great gardening books!

GIFT CERTIFICATES - 15% OFF
Held over from November.  One of our most popular sales last year - most people bought them for themselves!  Buy a gift certificate in any amount and pay just 85 cents on the dollar - good for any purchase at ECG, and can be combined with other sale prices.  The only restriction is that they're not valid until January 2010, but after that they never expire.  Buy with confidence: we now issue them with receipt numbers so that in most cases you won't have to worry about losing the certificate; we'll have a record of your balance at the store.
WREATHS & WREATHMAKING AT
EMERALD CITY GARDENS
It's that time again.  We've cleared out the shack, tightened the bolts, brought in the cut greens and holly and our wreath-making table is up and running!  Creating your own holiday masterpiece is economical, fun, and we'll show you how to do it if you haven't before.  You can also leave it in our capable hands if you don't have time for all that - we'll have a nice selection of fresh, ready-made wreaths at least through mid-December, and custom orders are welcome.  Prices below.

Happy Holly Days!  We're putting another year to bed soon but you've still got a couple of weeks of stress-free, non-mall shopping with e-z parking available to you here on glamorous Leary Way.  We may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think "holiday shopping" but there's some exceptionally cool stuff in right now, inside and out, that's sure to make your season bright!

Before we get to that, though, thank you for the positive feedback on our new website.  The most commented-on element was the cute pic of shopcat Tanker in the harvest bucket so it seemed logical to start off this edition with another cute cat picture, right?  Here ya go: this is Casper, our youngest at home, helping with the decorating.  Casper came to us from the Seattle Animal Shelter's foster cats program and we can't recommend the good work that they do highly enough.  In hard times, animals suffer as much as people (if not more) and we hope you'll keep worthy animal charities in mind during the gift-giving season.  They need you even more than we do!  Well, at least as much as we do.

Could you help me with these lights, please?  I have no thumbs.
A reminder:  if you sign up for our mailing list  we'll send you quick email notices when this page is updated - including special sales and other offers not reported here.  Our "Frequent Flyer" cards for earned discounts is available to mailing list members only - ask for yours when you come in.

BREAKING NEWS: We have decided NOT to close this year between Christmas and New Year's Day.  We'll be open Christmas Eve but closing early (about 1pm), closed Friday the 25th, closed Tuesday the 29th because it's Tuesday and closed Friday the 1st.  Normal hours after that!

Besides, the real reason to come in that day is for the one-day-only special sales*, of course!  I could tell you what they are, but that would be like telling you what we got you for Giftsmas - it would spoil the surprise, right?  People who have ventured in when we've done things like this in the past have rarely left disappointed, though - unlike the poor slobs who miss out.  You don't want to be a poor slob, do you?  Are we penciled in on your calendar/typed into your BlackBerry yet?  Alrighty then - skål o välkommen!

okay, you can call the nursery on Sunday - (206)789-1314 - and I'll announce it on Facebook that day, too.  You really don't want to miss this!
